Improving the position of national minorities

Improving the position of national minorities through raising awareness of the importance of the rights of national minorities, strengthening capacities at the local level, as well as establishing a system of monitoring the implementation of the Action Plan for national minorities, were the main topics of the meeting of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue, prof. dr. Rejhan R. Kurtović, director of ECMI, prof. dr. Vello Pettai, as well as representatives of the EU Delegation to Serbia and GIZ, within the project "Facility supporting strengthening the rule of law in the Republic of Serbia" co-financed by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The plan of activities that will be implemented by the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) by mid-2025 was presented, focusing on four areas - improving the methodology for monitoring the implementation of the Action Plan for National Minorities; strengthening the capacity of national councils of national minorities; strengthening the capacity of the Council for interethnic relations; as well as raising awareness of civil servants about the rights of national minorities.

The presented activities, aimed at the realization of the part of the action plan for Chapter 23 that improve the position of national minorities, will be implemented by the project team of the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) from Flensburg (Germany), which is engaged in research of various aspects of the protection of national minorities in Europe.
